  15. <p>     DIED. LINUS PAULING, 93, Nobel-prizewinning chemist; of cancer;
  16. in Big Sur, California. Son of an Oregon druggist, Pauling made
  17. hundreds of contributions to chemistry, publishing 50 research
  18. papers by the time he was 30. In 1954 he was awarded the Nobel
  19. Prize for Chemistry for his work on the nature of the chemical
  20. bond that holds molecules together, research that led to the
  21. discovery of the structure of DNA. He became a tireless campaigner
  22. against nuclear testing and in 1963 was awarded a second Nobel--for Peace. In the '70s he advocated large doses of vitamin
  23. C to guard against many ills, from colds to cancer, a treatment
  24. that is still controversial. DNA researcher Francis Crick once
  25. said that the core of Pauling's genius was "boldness in theory
  26. making--boldness as an aspect of rigor."
