- <p> DIED. LINUS PAULING, 93, Nobel-prizewinning chemist; of cancer;
- in Big Sur, California. Son of an Oregon druggist, Pauling made
- hundreds of contributions to chemistry, publishing 50 research
- papers by the time he was 30. In 1954 he was awarded the Nobel
- Prize for Chemistry for his work on the nature of the chemical
- bond that holds molecules together, research that led to the
- discovery of the structure of DNA. He became a tireless campaigner
- against nuclear testing and in 1963 was awarded a second Nobel--for Peace. In the '70s he advocated large doses of vitamin
- C to guard against many ills, from colds to cancer, a treatment
- that is still controversial. DNA researcher Francis Crick once
- said that the core of Pauling's genius was "boldness in theory
- making--boldness as an aspect of rigor."
